One of the things that I love about OWM is the fact that you don’t have to do it in one week, I highly recommend working through the checklist for each niche you choose as fast as you can so you can start earning money, but if you work full time or have other commitments, you can definitely take your time working through the checklist for each niche you choose. I cannot recommend it enough for people that work because of the simplicity of the entire course.

I do not recommend One Week Marketing to those of you who may be looking to make money tomorrow without lifting a finger. I also cannot recommend OWM if you are already familiar with how to build a web property and get traffic to it. You may learn a thing or two, but I do not think it’s worth the money for the intermediate to advanced internet marketer. If you have found yourself in the boat where you have some knowledge, but are looking for the pie in the sky, take what you have learned and put it to work. Just start experimenting and you should have some success and STOP SPENDING MONEY ON MORE EBOOKS.

if you are still reading this, then I’m assuming you have determined that OWM may be right for you to start making money online. Follow the steps that are put in front of you in the course and you can make money. However, some things have changed since One Week Marketing first hit the market and I would recommend some small changes be made in your efforts while you are going through this step by step course.

Since I’m getting a little long winded already, I’m going to save my recommended changes for future posts over the next week or two. To make sure you don’t miss any of these suggested changes, I recommend subscribing to my blog, which you can do along the right hand side of the page. Not only will you be notified of new posts, but you will also receive a free ebook about building an optin list. You may not be quite ready for a list, but it will be a nice piece of information to have when you are ready.

I’m not going to tell you my niches, but I do have to say that the two niches I have been working in so far have really helped me in my every day life. When I chose these niches, I knew one would benefit me, but the other one really surprised me once I started doing my research. Throughout the whole process in both niches I have learned tips to make me a better person and help out my husband as well, sometimes he knows I’m helping him and sometimes he doesn’t.

I just wanted to share the idea with you that while you are writing your articles for bum marketing you may learn something to help you out in your business or every day life and I think this is just a side benefit of affiliate marketing.

I love the quote that PotPieGirl promotes on the homepage of her blog:

“If you’re willing to do for a year what others won’t, you can do for a lifetime what other CAN’T!”

I like this quote because it’s inspirational and makes it think of where I would like to take my making money online efforts.

Since I started this blog a week ago, I’ve been thinking what I would like to use as a quote for myself and my blog. I tried to think of inspiring things and such, but that’s just not me. I kept on coming back to a saying that my dad always said to me growing up. It’s not inspirational, but it’s to the point and I think it really fits the making money online scene.

“Wish in one hand and poop in the other; see which one fills up faster!”

That’s my quote and I’m sticking to it.

Here’s why I think it’s fitting. Many people that are trying to make money online start out trying to find the pie in the sky, get rich overnight solution. Well, I hate to tell you this, but a solution like this doesn’t exist. You can just keep wishing for a solution like this, but you’d be better off saving your money and playing the lottery; the odds are that much against you.

So, stop wishing and start doing; odds are that your poopless hand that you wished in will start to fill up.

The other problem that I had with my original theme was it was free. Don’t get me wrong, I use and love Wordpress because it is free, but a lot of times free plugins and free themes tend to break when Wordpress is upgraded and free WP authors are not required to keep their code up to date. Why should they? These people are not getting paid for what they do, they code these plugins and themes because they are learning, they really like to do it, they are trying to drum up business, or even just building links. No matter why they do this, it’s a free service they are offering for the rest of us.

So, I decided to look into a premium theme to use on this and my other blogs. Although, I really liked the idea of how the Thesis and Flexsqueeze themes work, for some reason I have been afraid of these because everything I read about these themes seems to be over my head at this point in time. Also, I was afraid to pay almost $200 for a theme that may take me another month to figure out how to use it.

One day, I just happened to be reading one of my favorite Wordpress blogs, WP Tavern or Theme Lab and noticed an ad for Elegant Themes in the sidebar. I took a gander through all of the themes available and then I went to check out the price thinking it at least has to be a $100 one time payment or $20 a month. I was completely surprised to find out that a membership to their site is only $20 a year. At the time when I signed up, there must have been at least 25 themes already available and since then they have released about 2 new themes a month. Except for the logos, all of their themes are ready to go for you right out of the box. Of course, I always seem to be tweaking something, but for the most part my tweaking only takes about an hour or so.

Out of this great collection of themes, why did I choose Interphase?

1. It has a clean look, while offering a lot of content on the home page.
2. There weren’t a lot of graphics in this theme that I would have to remove. Sometimes the headers at Elegant Themes are geared towards a certain niche, this was not one of them.
3. My old logo fits right into the header without having to resize it. This made for a real smooth transition.
4. As with all of the Elegant Themes, many of the customizations that I wanted do do were done right in their custom menu section.
5. It offered a widget for the 125 x 125 ad section. This way I could get around to this part when I want to instead of having blank ads sitting there all looking stupid.
6. It was compatible across all browsers. No screwing around with making my own custom CSS for IE6 and IE7. If you’re reading this blog using either of these browsers, I urge you to upgrade to Firefox or Chrome. You will never go back to IE unless you absolutely have to.

Customizing Interphase.

As with all of the themes have used from Elegant Themes, the code is extremely easy to read if you do need to customize it. I may be wrong, but I think I only made one change to this theme from the original download and that was making the header a touch smaller. I noticed that on my laptop my content was being pushed below the fold and I didn’t like that. Making the header smaller would allow even more of my content to show on an even larger screen. I also resized the font from 11px to 12px. I was having a real difficult time reading things at the smaller font size.

So, for the time being, this blog will be running Interphase, unless I see something I absolutely fall in love with that Elegant Themes releases in the future.

It took me about 6 months of resiting before I signed up for Wealthy Affiliate and then I paid for it another couple of months before I really started visiting the site and forum regularly. Looking back, I have to wonder what the heck I was smoking because it’s the best money that I’ve ever spent. Other forums that I have belonged to were either too difficult to get an answer out of or they treated you like a total “noob” for asking such a silly question. This meant that I didn’t participate and wasted my money.

Just the other day I was in the forum talking about my fear of writing an Ezinearticle and someone popped in like a teacher giving me homework, expecting me to have an article submitted to Ezine the very next day. This hit just the right button for me because the “employee” in me is so used to having to answer to someone. I went right out, wrote that article and submitted it, no questions asked. Any other forum that I’ve been a member of would have either chastised me or ignored me.

So, more about this $1 trial. You get full access to all of the tools that are available to regular members which means the forum, link tracking tools, article spinner, keyword research, uploaded tutorials that other members have submitted, and Niche Q. Niche Q is actually the reason that I finally signed up, each month there is access to a fully researched niche with articles, emails, landing pages and more. I have been so busy with other things that I haven’t even had a chance to get into any of these niches yet. The research that goes into these niches is extremely thorough and you will have access one of your choice with your trial membership. The info you are given can be downloaded to your hard drive, so even if you choose to cancel before your 7 days is up, you will still have this valuable information which is definitely worth the $1 you’ll be spending on the trial. I have signed up for similar trials in the past for more than $1 and I didn’t even get access to the forums, so I felt like I couldn’t make an informed decision and I canceled.

If you think Wealthy Affiliate is a ripoff once you have tried it, then all you have to do is cancel. Feel free to come back and leave a comment here telling me how dumb I am as well. One of the barriers that I have had is that starting an account with Aweber, Icontact, or Get Response has always been that I would need to make yet another monthly payment that I am not yet covering. I am aware that Constant Contact offers their services for free up to 60 days or 100 email addresses, but in the meantime I have found a better service to use so I can get my feet wet. That service is Mail Chimp.

Mail Chimp will allow you up to 500 members and 3000 sent emails a month for free before you have to sign up for a monthly subscription with them. If you have 500 members on your email list, this would mean that you can send 6 emails a month without having to pay a dime for using their services. They also offer pay as you go pricing, so if you decide that you need to contact the members of your list a little more in one month then you don’t have to start a subscription plan with them unless your account is over 500 members. One thing I almost forgot is the 500 members is across all of your email lists so you can have more than one list, but you are still limited to 500 total email addresses and 3000 total emails sent.

Other advantages of Mail Chimp that I have found are:

1. A Wordpress plugin makes it very easy to integrate with Wordpress. I use WP almost exclusively, so this is very important.
2. Unlimited image and file hosting for free.
3. No charge for archiving.
4. Easy to use templates.
5. RSS feeds to email. Jackie at Internet Marketing Strategy uses this with her email list very well and it was something I was really glad to find out that Mail Chimp offered.
6. Many more, there’s just way too many to list here.

Some disadvantages of Mail Chimp.

1. The setup interface is a little confusing at first. I can’t say that I can compare it to any other service, but the whole interface just doesn’t seem logical to me.
2. Their signup forms have been a little difficult for me to customize and add to some of my pages. I have been learning a lot along the way though and I’ll try to do a post here soon regarding this.
3. I don’t know if it’s just me, but their help section has caused some fits for me when trying to find answers.

Overall, for me the advantages of Mail Chimp definitely outweight the disadvantages and it’s the service I am running with to set up my email lists. As of today, price is no longer a barrier to entry for those who want to start their first email list.

No matter who you choose for an email list service, please keep in mind how you feel when you are bombarded with emails only trying to sell you something 3-4 times a day. Your list members are people and not just a check.

In case you are skeptical, I will not be charging anything for the setup services, as long as you sign up through one of the links offered on the page and then let me know that you did this through my contact form. I will make money as a commission from your monthly hosting fees, but I will never ask you for anything to set your site up.

As of today I have added Wealthy Affiliate as an option for my services. In case you didn’t know, WA offers hosting with their monthly fee and if you are a member, to not take advantage of the hosting services offered is just crazy since you are paying for it.

That’s all I have for now, I’ve been pretty busy working on a couple of projects, but I will make sure to post when I think of some other worthwhile subjects.

If you’re not familiar with opt in email marketing, usually it entails you giving the list owner your name and email address in return for a free report or updates about a product. When you give the owner your name, you are giving them permission to send you emails in the future as well. You may have heard of the term permission marketing and this would be a good example of it in it’s purest form.

Many of these lists I have signed up for have given me some very useful information and update me when I need it, but there are other lists that I have found myself on that will send me up to 4 to 5 emails a DAY. If they were offering me some really great information or tips, I would really appreciate these emails. Instead, each and every email that I receive from these lists are trying to sell me something. Talk about abusing our relationship.

Obviously, since I run a blog about making money online, I am definitely not against it. However, I know that I am not the only person on these email lists and if these perpetual onslaughts of emails are irritating me, think about what a turn off they are to people that do not know about permission marketing or who are just starting out. These poor people don’t know any better and may buy everything that comes along in their inbox; this makes our entire industry look bad and if there are a lot of complaints it could open us up to more government scrutiny. Both you and I know that we don’t want that.

I do not run my own email list, but I would like to start one for this blog real soon. If you are just starting your own email list and you are tempted to send out 5 emails a day because that’s the way you will get rich, please at least offer something of value in those emails and don’t just try to sell something with everything you send out. Make a note of these bad examples and vow that you will never be that way. I can guarantee you, your list will grow and your readers will thank you by opening the emails that you send instead of just deleting them and asking to be removed.

One of the people I have met online over the last three years is Josh who is now the CEO at Echelon Media. When I first found him, he had just started his blog, Unconventional Marketing.

Josh is now starting an experiment and writing a book about it. His social experiment is called “Will You Be My Friend” and he is going to try to befriend as many people as he can and then cultivate those relationships into real life friendships. At the end he will try to visit the top 20-25 friends in real life and see what happens.
