If you are using WordPress, make sure you disable and delete this plugin right away and follow the instructions given to you at their website. Keeping WordPress secure is difficult enough, we don’t need to be letting the hackers in voluntarily.

The timing could not have been better for this theme as I finally got around to setting up one of my favorite affiliate site ideas yet, that is Miche Bag Reviews. I’m confident exposing this site because it is a niche that is a personal passion of mine and I don’t think anyone would be able to match that, even if they decide to get into this niche.

Anyways, back to my review of the In Review theme. Just as all of the other themes from Elegant Themes go, this theme was simple to install and use. I prefer to upload all of my themes through FTP, so that’s how I installed it. I don’t know about you, but whenever I try to upload a theme or a plugin from my hard drive, I seem to run into problems.

Once uploaded, I had to change the logo on the theme for the header, I just used their blank template and typed in the name of my site using Gimp.

Then I went an updated my options through ePanel which I’ve shown here. Through the ePanel, you can pick and choose which pages are shown in the main menu of the site. You can also add Adsense code which would be shown on each page. Instead of using Adsense code, I decided to add a banner into this slot instead. It shows up right above the comments at the end of each post.

I also changed the navigation menu in ePanel to not show any of the categories in the navigation bar. I did this because I was getting duplicate navigation bars at the top of the blog and it looked real silly. One thing I could do is show my pages in the nav bar at the top of the blog and not show any categories, but for right now, I’m real happy with how things have turned out. Epanel is also where you would change the main color of your blog if you’re interested in that as well.

One thing I would like to point out if you are planning on using this theme, is you will need to add a thumbnail to every post in order to use the Timthumb script which is integrated right into the theme. This is real easy, all you have to do is add a custom field called “Thumbnail” at the end of your post, then enter the URL of your picture. If you choose not to use the thumbnail option, then this part is not necessary. Just like all of their other themes, this one is very well documented and I highly recommend reading through the help docs before getting too far into using this theme. They were very helpful for me. Otherwise, the forums at Elegant Themes are a great way to get answers to your questions as well, I have found it extremely helpful.

If you can’t guess, I would give the In Review Theme 5 stars if I was using it here at this blog. It is an excellent way to set up a review site if it’s in your plans for the future. AQ2BYRK9E73X

In case you are skeptical, I will not be charging anything for the setup services, as long as you sign up through one of the links offered on the page and then let me know that you did this through my contact form. I will make money as a commission from your monthly hosting fees, but I will never ask you for anything to set your site up.

First of all, this is for those of you who use WordPress for you sites, but want an easy way to dedicate a single page to a single product and not have it listed on your blog, unless that’s the way you want it.

First of all, you need to have WordPress set up on your website. If you need help with this, visit how to start a business website and learn how. If you are real uncomfortable working with webhosting then I highly recommend page.ly for your WordPress hosting needs. To use this method, you will have to pay the one time $5 fee for FTP access. You will save this in time and headaches by hosting with them.

Once you have your site all set up you are now ready to create a sales or squeeze page for your product or email list. In this case, we are going to pretend that I am working on a sales page for a product which I have acquired the resale rights for. I’m not going to dig into any HTML coding as your favorite WYSIWYG software should take care of this for you.

So, the first thing I’m going to do is open the sales page that comes with my product in my favorite WYSIWYG HTML editor. I recommend Kompozer because it’s free and it is the one I have found easiest to use. At this point, I’m not going to talk about this, but make sure you change the blank information on the sales page and the payment button, you don’t want your customers getting confused and you definitely don’t want them to be paying someone else or not getting to a payment page at all.

While you are editing your HTML you will also want to gather all of the images used on the sales page into one place. The are probably placed in some sort of “images” folder within the product download. I would just copy this folder, paste it, and then rename it as something else. I recommend a format like “templatename-src” so you will be able to find it if you need to troubleshoot.

We talked about editing your text earlier, but you also need to edit the source code for your pictures. Since this template and source code goes into the images folder, your image src should look something like the following:

http://websitename.com/wp-content/themes/themename/templatename-src/imagename.jpg

Be sure you change the CSS code as well or your salespage won’t look right. If your salespage also references an external stylesheet, you will also need to change the source code to this. Put the style sheet in the “templatename-src” folder as well to keep things organized.

Once you have your salespage editing done, do a “save as” and change the file name to something other than “index”, this is important because leaving the file named “index” could interfere with your theme. At this point in time you can close Kompozer or whatever software you are using.

Now, go ahead and open Notepad or your favorite PHP editing software and open the new html file which you just created. You are going to add the following code to the top of your page:

*/ ?>

Then “save as” “new file name.php”.

Now you need to upload everything via FTP to your website. I prefer to use CoreFTP for uploading to my websites. It’s what I’m used to as I’ve been using it for over 10 years now. You will be uploading your new “templatename-src” folder along with your “new file name.php” file into the wp-content/themename folder. Themename is the name of the current theme you are using.

Wow, this seems so simple when I’m doing this, but it does have more steps than I thought. If I lost you somewhere, please feel free to post in the comments and I will respond there with the answer. We are almost done, so please hang in there.

You will now login to your WordPress site and create a new page like you would normally do. Create a name for your page and then along the left hand side, you will see a header called “attributes” and then the second option should be called “template” which will be followed by a drop-down menu. If everything went right, you should see “New Template Name” as one of your options. Choose this option from the drop-down menu.

Then complete the rest of the fields like you would for any other new WordPress page. Once you’ve done this, preview and you should see your new sales page in all it’s glory. If you don’t, then go back and make sure your files are in the correct folders.

One downfall of this method is you don’t get the SEO benefits of the theme you are using or any SEO plugins you have enabled. You will need to change the title in the HTML code of your page if you are changing it at all. Please keep in mind that I am not a coding expert, so if you are and you see any reasons why salespages should not be set up this way, please feel free to comment.

Also, as I said earlier, please feel free to ask questions you may have in the comments and I will help the best way I can. I will also try to get this up on a video sometime soon as I think it is a lot easier to follow if you see it.

I’m not saying you should not upgrade, but I urge you to have a backup of your site handy just in case things don’t go right, this way you can revert back to your old site while you figure out what went wrong. The database backup plugin that I have been using is WP DB Backup, however, when I went to check their page on the plugin repository, it appears that this plugin is broken with WordPress 3.0. I’m just speculating, but it must be because the table structure in the upgrade has changed. I can’t complain, this is a free plugin and the person who wrote it did it for free without receiving anything from me. I had a good run with it and I’m hoping that it will be upgraded soon. I may be looking for another solution soon if it is not upgraded in the near future.

If you use WordPress a lot like I do, you may want to consider BackupBuddy which is a paid plugin from PluginBuddy. It would give you piece of mind before upgrading.

Also, keep in mind that some of your plugins may not be compatible with 3.0, since it is a major release. If you are using any paid plugins, I would think the developers have covered this for you already, if not, I would really reconsider the plugin you have paid for. The same cannot be expected from free plugins. These authors have spilled their time and possible money into building a plugin for you to use for free. Don’t expect paid support from a free plugin.

Last but not least, it appears that the new upgrade is larger than the previous ones have been since the automatic upgrade option has been added to the core of WordPress. Pressography.com has a real simple solution to this problem and posted it in their daily tip for June 19th, 2010. You can find it at Exhausted Memory Size Upgrading to WordPress 3.0.

So far, I haven’t seen a reason to upgrade to 3.0 as of right now, but I will be doing so soon. I typically like to wait until a smaller release after the major one comes out because it almost always seems that a bug is missed during beta testing. This usually gives plugin authors time to catch up as well. If you use a WordPress hosting service like Page.ly, this is what they do as well.

So whether you choose to upgrade right now or in the near future is totally up to you, just don’t wait too long. Waiting too long could cause  you even more headaches down the line.

The other problem that I had with my original theme was it was free. Don’t get me wrong, I use and love WordPress because it is free, but a lot of times free plugins and free themes tend to break when WordPress is upgraded and free WP authors are not required to keep their code up to date. Why should they? These people are not getting paid for what they do, they code these plugins and themes because they are learning, they really like to do it, they are trying to drum up business, or even just building links. No matter why they do this, it’s a free service they are offering for the rest of us.

So, I decided to look into a premium theme to use on this and my other blogs. Although, I really liked the idea of how the Thesis and Flexsqueeze themes work, for some reason I have been afraid of these because everything I read about these themes seems to be over my head at this point in time. Also, I was afraid to pay almost $200 for a theme that may take me another month to figure out how to use it.

One day, I just happened to be reading one of my favorite WordPress blogs, WP Tavern or Theme Lab and noticed an ad for Elegant Themes in the sidebar. I took a gander through all of the themes available and then I went to check out the price thinking it at least has to be a $100 one time payment or $20 a month. I was completely surprised to find out that a membership to their site is only $20 a year. At the time when I signed up, there must have been at least 25 themes already available and since then they have released about 2 new themes a month. Except for the logos, all of their themes are ready to go for you right out of the box. Of course, I always seem to be tweaking something, but for the most part my tweaking only takes about an hour or so.

Out of this great collection of themes, why did I choose Interphase?

1. It has a clean look, while offering a lot of content on the home page.
2. There weren’t a lot of graphics in this theme that I would have to remove. Sometimes the headers at Elegant Themes are geared towards a certain niche, this was not one of them.
3. My old logo fits right into the header without having to resize it. This made for a real smooth transition.
4. As with all of the Elegant Themes, many of the customizations that I wanted do do were done right in their custom menu section.
5. It offered a widget for the 125 x 125 ad section. This way I could get around to this part when I want to instead of having blank ads sitting there all looking stupid.
6. It was compatible across all browsers. No screwing around with making my own custom CSS for IE6 and IE7. If you’re reading this blog using either of these browsers, I urge you to upgrade to Firefox or Chrome. You will never go back to IE unless you absolutely have to.

Customizing Interphase.

As with all of the themes have used from Elegant Themes, the code is extremely easy to read if you do need to customize it. I may be wrong, but I think I only made one change to this theme from the original download and that was making the header a touch smaller. I noticed that on my laptop my content was being pushed below the fold and I didn’t like that. Making the header smaller would allow even more of my content to show on an even larger screen. I also resized the font from 11px to 12px. I was having a real difficult time reading things at the smaller font size.

So, for the time being, this blog will be running Interphase, unless I see something I absolutely fall in love with that Elegant Themes releases in the future.
