8 Reasons You Are Not Making Money Online

I have owned an online business since 2004 and for years I could not figure out why I just was not making anything of significance. In my lens, Why I Will Not Make New Years Resolutions for 2011, I really sat down and thought about some habits that I needed to change in order to be successful and this list is a rundown of the things I have found out about myself. I’m sure not all 8 will apply to you, but I’d bet there’s a couple of things in this list which could be holding you back.

8. You’re afraid. You may not know it, but you are afraid of failing. You are afraid of what others might think of you or that your family may laugh at you. You’re afraid to put yourself out there to try new things. I was afraid of writing for Ezinearticles for the longest time because of the manual review process, I didn’t want to be rejected because my writing wasn’t good enough. Once someone told me to just do it and held me accountable, I did it and realized that I had nothing to be afraid of. I now have about 85 articles at Ezine. I should have more, but I haven’t made the time to write more yet.

7. You’re desperate. When you need money now, nothing will work fast enough. Many times it takes years for a mega blog to become successful and even many of my lenses didn’t start earning me any money until they were at least 3 months old. Once you get the idea out of your head that you are going to be earning $2000 a day tomorrow, you will learn to become more patient and just keep building your empire.

6. You’re looking for a magic pill. Your desperation could lead you to jumping from blog to blog and buying ebook upon ebook leading to an extremely high credit card bill. Sit down and focus on one or two things to start. Learn everything you can about it and then keep at it. Once you’ve mastered what you’re working on, you should have enough money to expand your knowledge and earn even more money.

5. You’re not investing in your business. On the other hand, you have to run your business like it is one and sometimes you’ll find you need to spend some money. Things that come to mind which almost everyone should have would be hosting and an email list. Hosting to get you started shouldn’t cost a lot. If you are using WordPress, I recommend Page.ly, you do not need to worry about setup or maintenance on your WordPress sites. It will cost you a little more, but it’s well worth it. If you are looking for a low cost way to bust into email marketing, I recommend Mailchimp. You can get started for free and by the time you have to start paying for it, you should be making enough to pay for it.

4. You’re over thinking things. This kind of goes along with being desperate, but when you start to over think what you are doing you will start to doubt what you are doing. Be confident and understand that you are going to learn from your mistakes. Once you get past this, you should start to see some rewards.

3. You check your emails constantly. Email is a time sink that doesn’t produce any money. Set aside time to check your email and keep it to 15 minutes or the end of your day once you are done with anything. This will keep you from feeling like you are being productive without getting anything done.

2. You’ve cut yourself off from the world. Everybody needs a break, which is why employers will often force you to take a vacation. When you are working online for yourself it’s easy to forget this. Time spent with your family or doing the things you enjoy will keep you refreshed and ready to tackle the world when you get back to your computer. You will also be surprised at how many niche ideas you can come up with when you are out and about being a real person.

1. You’ve set goals, but haven’t changed your habits. This is possibly your biggest problem. We all want to make $1000′s a month, but how are you going to get there. Think about your goals, then think about what method you are going to use to get there and then think of 2 or 3 habits that you need to change in order to start moving towards that goal. For example, this year I’ve set a goal to be making $500 per month by June. The first habit I’ll be changing is publishing one thing every day. It doesn’t matter if that thing published is a blog post, Squidoo lens, Hub, or article, I just need to do something. It takes at least 20 days to build a habit, so once I feel that this is ingrained in me, I will move on to the next habit. If I feel I’ve changed all of those habits, then I need to write down 2 or 3 more that I need to change.

One last note about changing habits, stick to only one habit at a time and don’t piggyback. What I mean is, if you’re goal is to publish one thing a day and you happen to do 7 on the first day, don’t stop for the week. This doesn’t help you change the way your mind thinks at all. If you happen to publish 7 things on day one, then you still need to publish one thing on day two and so forth. If you do everything the first day and don’t keep up with changing your habit, then by the time you get to day one of next week you will become frozen because your mind is now thinking you have to publish 7 things again.

I hope reading this post has helped you identify some things that you can do to help you along in your online business. Keep in mind that changing one thing can really make a difference, this has been one of the toughest lessons I’ve had to learn.

If you are in the affiliate marketing business, then there is always a 3rd thing that you can always rely on and that’s a change in the online marketing rules. In late February, there was another rules change; this time around it was Google and a change made in their algorithm. It has been dubbed the “Farmer’s Update” by many bloggers because it is a hit against content farms. Sites like Hubpages, Ezinearticles, and Associated Content were hit hard in the rankings. Supposedly Squidoo did not get hit, but I would beg to differ as some of my lenses with the most traffic have really died off in the rankings.

The dying off of traffic and the Google changes have really hit me hard. I was on a role of publishing a new lens or hub every 2 days (almost to my goal of 1 a day), but then this change came along and really made me start to rethink everything. When this happens, I become almost frozen, not doing a darn thing online or even at home because I have once again taken a hit in traffic which turns into a hit on my income.

This isn’t the first time something like this has happened to me. Remember when eBay went from a per sale payout to a pay-per-click payout? That change really hit me hard because along with that change came a rule that you cannot use EPN affiliate links on a site that you do not own. I had to change about 30 lenses that were using EPN links from my own to Squidoo’s. My income took a dip by a ton. Once again, I was frozen not wanting to publish anything because my world was upside down.

My whole point of this is change happens fast in the affiliate marketing business and you need to be able to deal with change in order to be successful. If you can’t deal with change, then you should find a different way to build your online income.

I have started to add more content to the lenses that have taken a hit. This whole task is really daunting, I have 157 lenses and at least half of them need some editing to bring them up to par. This daunting task is what has frozen me which is why I needed to come up with a new action plan. I am more productive when I’m producing new content and then the editing comes easier, so what I’m going to do is get back on task to building a new page every day and then once I’m done, I’ll move on to editing my old content. I will also start to look for new opportunities to build my own websites because relying on what someone else owns is not a good idea.

Don’t give up on your dream of making money online if you are not creative. The creativity I am talking about is not the ability to draw or write the next best fantasy novel, but it is the ability to understand how things work and change something up just one little bit in order to differentiate yourself.

You just bought the next latest and greatest ebook that has been released on the market; what you need to understand is that 1,000′s of others have also bought this ebook so you are going to be competing with a lot of other people using the same techniques. This happened when PotPieGirl started selling One Week Marketing; everyone started putting up lenses promoting clickbank products and they all looked the same. I’m sure this is a big reason behind why Squidoo changed their policies regarding certain niches and products.

Take a step back and think about what OWM is really teaching you; she is teaching you how to get a page to the top of the SERPS and even dominate the SERPS for a certain keyword. If done correctly, you could in theory own the first page of Google if you play your cards right.

Here’s where you need to think outside of the box; what else have I learned along the way can I add to my toolbox of knowledge to really stand out and not look like everyone else? You don’t need to reinvent the wheel, just tweak something. Don’t worry if someone said you should do it or not, just feel free to experiment and mix things up a little. If it works, great, you have a little secret trick to get your page ranked or get that extra sale, if it doesn’t work make a note to delete this idea from your head because it’s not right for what you are trying to do at this point in time.

Getting creative and adding more knowledge for yourself is how you will get ahead in IM and avoid IMADD. Today take some time to really think of what you have learned and try to find one thing you can do differently from everyone else. Then implement it and see what happens.

Making Money Online – My Changes for 2010

I no longer make New Year’s Resolutions because in the past I have always failed and I feel that making a resolution is only setting myself up for failure. Looking back at 2009, the whole year was a setup for failure brought on by myself and myself alone.

I allowed my video gaming core business to go by the wayside and fall to the back burner because I decided that I wanted to start building websites and web properties for affiliate marketing purposes instead. This was all well and good, but I didn’t have focus for anything I was working on. I started feeling the pressure of having way too many domains and not having any developed, then I would get another case of IMADD and I started article marketing. Moving into these directions wasn’t a bad thing, but I failed to focus on selling down the inventory I have in our storage room which is like money sitting right in the bank.

I don’t know about you, but when I get way too overwhelmed with my own projects, I totally shut down. Then I don’t do anything. Add on top of this all of the changes that eBay made along with the FTC regulations and for a while I was just a total lump on a log when I got home from work. I have to say that this is not the way to make money online successfully and move towards my ultimate goal of being able to afford to quit my day job.

2010 brought in the start of a new decade and a new beginning for me. I’m not resolving to do anything different, but I can already tell that I have a new found life for my online business. My new life has come with my new interim goals that I have set for myself. I subscribe to a few blogs and they have talked about huge goals that they have set for themselves, but these huge goals don’t always work for everyone. Now let me explain for myself.

I set a goal at the beginning of 2009 to eventually be making $100,000 a year. That’s a great goal, but when you are in the hole, it is very difficult to imagine that. I still have this ultimate goal, but I have also set an interim goal of getting at least one credit card paid off this year with my income from internet marketing. I have the tools in place and I know what I should be doing, but now I just need to suck it up and do it. If I get the tools in place for this first goal, I will be well on my way to making it to my ultimate goal where I really want to be.

So, what am I really changing for 2010? Nothing and everything. The biggest change I will be making is to finish the projects that I start. No longer will I be littering the internet with the waste of my failed projects. Doing this along should get me well on my way to my goal. In fact, I am almost finished with my first project; I will be posting details here once everything is up and running.

My Making Money Online Quote

I love the quote that PotPieGirl promotes on the homepage of her blog:

“If you’re willing to do for a year what others won’t, you can do for a lifetime what other CAN’T!”

I like this quote because it’s inspirational and makes it think of where I would like to take my making money online efforts.

Since I started this blog a week ago, I’ve been thinking what I would like to use as a quote for myself and my blog. I tried to think of inspiring things and such, but that’s just not me. I kept on coming back to a saying that my dad always said to me growing up. It’s not inspirational, but it’s to the point and I think it really fits the making money online scene.

“Wish in one hand and poop in the other; see which one fills up faster!”

That’s my quote and I’m sticking to it.

Here’s why I think it’s fitting. Many people that are trying to make money online start out trying to find the pie in the sky, get rich overnight solution. Well, I hate to tell you this, but a solution like this doesn’t exist. You can just keep wishing for a solution like this, but you’d be better off saving your money and playing the lottery; the odds are that much against you.

So, stop wishing and start doing; odds are that your poopless hand that you wished in will start to fill up.

Will You Be My Friend – An Online Social Experiment

I have met many people online since I have started blogging and affiliate marketing over the past couple of years. Many of them have come and gone, some have gone, and others have just burst on the scene. Would I expect any of these people to invite me to their wedding or would they expect me to go to their funeral? Absolutely not, but it’s amazing how you can become to feel connected with those that you follow on Twitter or become friends with on Facebook.

One of the people I have met online over the last three years is Josh who is now the CEO at Echelon Media. When I first found him, he had just started his blog, Unconventional Marketing.

Josh is now starting an experiment and writing a book about it. His social experiment is called “Will You Be My Friend” and he is going to try to befriend as many people as he can and then cultivate those relationships into real life friendships. At the end he will try to visit the top 20-25 friends in real life and see what happens.
