Everybody that is trying to make money online knows the story of YouTube. Three guys start a website from scratch where users can share their videos with others online and two years later (a very short time span in the business world) the site is purchased by Google for $1.65 billion in stock options.
I think many people starting out online have delusions of grandeur that their site is going to be the next YouTube, when in reality these stories are the exception and not the norm. There is a misconception that if you build a website then you will receive traffic and then you will get rich is totally perpetuated by those that are in the business of selling every make money online business in an ebook that is released to the public.
If you would like to be knocked down another peg, please read Seth Godin’s post, Hope and the magic lottery. Don’t take either of us the wrong way, we’re both just encouraging you to avoid shortcuts, but keep building on what is working for you. If you are constantly chasing the magic lottery, then you are not working on building your business which is what really matters most.
The harsh truth is, you can make money online, but it does take time and effort. You are not going to be able to just put up a WordPress blog, slap a couple of posts on it sprinkled with Adsense and get rich overnight. If you start your affiliate marketing journey in this fashion, I would put money on the fact that you are going to fail. You will get frustrated and give up because your site is not receiving any traffic which means you are not making any money.
If I haven’t burst your bubble yet, then your mindset is right to start an online affiliate business. I can guarantee you are going to fail along the way, but that is the only you are going to learn. By all means, if you have the skills, connections and know how to start the next YouTube, please go for it. If you are just an average Joe that doesn’t even know what HTML is, please get started, just be realistic.
Until later,

Resources like the one you mentioned here will be very useful to me! I will post a link to this page on my blog. I am sure my visitors will find that very useful.
You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be really something which I think I would never understand. It seems too complicated and very broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!
I trust you and it also surely gonna help lots of people.
Hey B, Can I encourage you to look around at a few other blogs and sites that give advice on making money online. Affiliate Marketing is certainly one way but it requires a lot of keyword research and the ability to spot hot keywords when they are rising up the ranks.
With the number of aff marketers online it is difficult to get noticed.
A key to success going forward would be to carve out a unique place on the web. Be different, stand out, get noticed. But, be sure to have a range of things to sell for when that happens.
Regards, Michael.

Michael,
Thank you for stopping by and commenting.
I agree with you that affiliate marketing is difficult and sometimes extremely frustrating. I am always open to different ideas on how to make money online.
I also think that carving out a unique place on the web is a good idea as part of an entire MMO strategy, however having only one site is just not right for everyone.
You see, I enjoy researching keywords and disagree with you that you have to hit them while they are rising. In some cases this may be true, but there are some keywords that are “evergreen” and they will bring you traffic today and a year from now.
I also enjoy running multiple websites and properties. I get bored working in only one niche, so building multiple blogs that bring value to my visitors is how I choose to move forward.
As far as my little niche on the web, this is my main one, but I continue to work on other sites that I own daily as well.
Thanks again for stopping by, I hope you will come back once in a while.
